My undying fascination for beaches is deeply rooted. I grew up in a village just few meters away from the beach. I could still remember the mornings when my father would take me and my siblings to the beach. Before going for work, he would find time to take us to the beach. Even after he retired he would still take us to the beach (He retired while I was still young). He even bought a house and lot by the beach. I loved the place. I would sometimes rather sleep there than in our house. The house and lot were sold though, when my father got struck by a serious illness. Now he is resting in peace.

Fifty kilos ago, We used to have a family vacation at Sigaboy (now Governor Generoso), Davao Oriental. We would stay there for a month. My favorite place was the house of my aunt by the beach. The house is fronting an Island, measuring around one square kilometer. It's a Rocky Island with a Lighthouse. Most of its shore is covered by rocks, sorrounded by corals. But there is a portion, around two hundred meters in length, which is covered by white sand, and a perfect place of swimming.  We used to circle around the island with my counsins and siblings. Most of us would suffer from minor bruises, because of the rocks.

One time, I took the small boat of my counsin and sailed to the island by myself. The kept rowing but the current would keep sending back the boat to the mainland shore. Until the big waves started to form. I could neither go to the island nor to the shore. Fortunately, my bigger cousin rescued me. I of course got the usual reprimand from my parents. It wasnt so scarry for me. My desire to go to the island overcame my fear.

Today, the island is privately-owned. I can see the houses built on the beachline from my aunt's house. It has never been like it used to be. I'm still hoping though that one day I could buy an island just like it.
